“I inaugurated the Meet the Author 2021 series for the American Library in Paris in January with a virtual talk on The Language of Cities, my most recent book with Penguin. It was a chance to reflect on how we miss crowds in the age of Covid 19, to look back at the impact of previous epidemics on urbanism: from the cholera outbreaks, that killed thousands every summer in Paris in the 19th century, to the tuberculosis that drove the outdoor schooling movement in the 20th century. Now our biggest problem is that the gains we have made in making cities more liveable, during the last 20 years, are at risk since the private car has become the most formidable form of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).”

The conference aims to investigate the impact of the managerial organization and design expertise as key elements of architectural creativity. Since the last decades the most important architecture firms started to count hundreds of employees, having to necessarily structure themselves as real creative companies, managing the interaction between different skills – architects, structural engineers, plant engineers, furniture and product designers, graphic designers, IT experts, model-makers, accountants, legal experts etc. in order to foster their performance and remain competitive in the market. The managerial skills and the fruitful intersection of their internal different competences, can result in innovative design methodologies that will increasingly become crucial factors of the quality and competitiveness of the architecture firms.
